The River as Timepiece

The River as Timepiece

What is time? Time is nothing else but a human construction of efforts for understanding the complex universe around us. Is the current post-industrial dominant perception the only way to measure time? Are there other possibilities to seek out the sense of time and to touch its spirituality structure? How to appreciate the essential beauty of time? Or, simply live with it?

For her Votivpark-Garage project, FENG Lei collaborated with individuals of different ages, backgrounds and from different time zones, who all contributed one-minute smart-phone amateur video footages. Through the collective amateur video footages covering various Time Zones, the project intend to create a Time Lapse which represents each individual film maker’s perception on One-Minute-Time, reminding the spectators that we live in a world which contains parallel time, space and culture. There is not only a one-way conception to cross through time. Isn’t it, due to their rapidity, flexibility and mobility, the cell phones are the medium of communication, which represent the passion for roaming – similar to the qualities of cars in the 1960s.

Maximal freedom was given to the “filmmakers”, as the project is more about their individual observations, experiences and perceptions, less about rules or criterion. Among those, no matter the tranquility falling leaves in New Hampshire, noisy “Bugs’ Life” in Melbourne, or a “Silent, but NOT Speechless” minute from the prominent German pantomime JOMI, a group of art students performing in Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, each video has a story to tell and to share. Out of the disembodied Time, spaces and culture within the digital fragmentations are re-embodied and turned into a shared connectivity. After all, time is timeless, and we are only the transience.

"The River as Timepiece I come far, from
the place of havoc. Where, all sound
becomes one sound. Where, the moments
cannot be untangled from lifetimes.
Now, I am this river, Which falls from
Kearsarge to Contoocook. Time is never passing, but simply these waters through this gorge."
